“An aspirant must know the right subject combination for the course you desire to study. If not, such an aspirant will only labour in vain.” 

There are a lot of students that do well in UTME and Post UTME, but fail to get admission. One of the reasons is that they choose the wrong subject combination. While those who do not score as high as they get admission, they stay at home for another year.

Ways To Avoid Choosing The Wrong Subject Combination

1. Visit the school/JAMB website 

You can check your choice of institution’s website to check the brochure of studying a course in  the school. You will know what they need or not. Before you choose any course, make sure you check it by yourself. 

2. Go To The School 

You can visit the school. Go to the department of your desired course or the admission office to ask about the right subject combination for a particular course in the university. 

3. Ask Your Teacher Or Mentor 

It is essential to learn from the people who know more than you. Your teacher or your mentor will tell you the right thing to do. I must tell you that it is important for you to have a mentor. The person will monitor your growth timely and help you manage difficult situations and give you sufficient advice. 

4. Join Aspirant Groups

You can join aspirant groups on Facebook or WhatsApp for updates concerning UTME, subject combination etc. However. You must be wise and selective in the messages to pick. You should know that most of the people in the group are admission seekers. They may have little or no knowledge concerning the subject discussed. 

Subjects According To Departments In Secondary Schools

Science — Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Agricultural Science

Social Science (arts and commercial students) — Government, Economics, Geography 

Commercial/Management — Accounting 

Arts — Literature, Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa, CRS/IRS

General Subject —– English 

Note: avoid choosing subjects like Commerce,  Civic Education, Animal Husbandry, Marketing in your subject combination in UTME.
